Small business boasts big menu (Wednesday, February 03, 2010) If an Italian chain restaurant married a mom-and-pop Italian eatery, the birth would result in a baby named Mulberry Street. It is a good and bad offspring for all the right reasons.Let me explain. For beginners, Mulberry Street has the menu items popular at chains. Tomato bruschetta, fried calamari, pasta fagioli soup, chicken parmigiana and pizza are among the foods that have a place here. I appreciate that I can get my favorites in one place. Unfortunately, unlike chains, mom and pop places tend to have fewer locations, which is always a bad thing for me if the food is good. And the food is enjoyable at Mulberry Street.

Sparks' South Carolina story can't start a fire (Thursday, February 04, 2010) Nicholas Sparks writes "beach novels" for people whose vacations are too short for anything heavy and whose tastes are pretty far from the cutting edge. And the movies made from his books are cinematic sand castles - sappy, old fashioned and utterly forgotten by the next time the tide rolls in."Dear John" follows Sparks' lucrative formula with elements familiar to anyone who knows "A Walk to Remember," "The Notebook," "Message in a Bottle" or "Nights in Rodanthe." It has the beaches of Carolina (South Carolina this time), a slow-paced and generally chaste romance, love, longing and loss. It celebrates simple virtues and values - letter writing, patriotism, chivalry, people willing to do the right thing, no matter if it hurts. But Lasse Hallstrom's film of it is as bland as unseasoned grits.

Helping the Grammys enter the digital age (Thursday, February 04, 2010) You have to love awards shows. With all the glitz and glamour, the showmanship, and the celebrities hamming it up. And the awards - wait where did all the awards go?It's no secret that the Grammys are no longer really about giving out gold gramophones as much as they are a showcase for larger-than-life performances and once-in-a-lifetime collaborations. In theory, I don't have a problem with this. It keeps viewers engaged and gives gossip bloggers something to talk about Monday morning. Sure, it produces its own share of hits (Lady Gaga and Elton John) and misses (Beyonce desecrating Alanis Morisette's "You Oughta Know"), but in general this genre-bending mashup of top talent is a must-see TV for music fans.

Travolta swaggers over the top (Thursday, February 04, 2010) John Travolta shaved his head, dyed his goatee and gave himself and his stunt double a real workout in "From Paris With Love," a gonzo spy shoot-em-up from the folks who gave us "Taken."But even though the action is every bit as explosive and the jokey tone is an amusing departure from "Taken's" serious man "with very particular skills," "Paris" is basically a bloody buddy picture that tries too hard.Travolta is Charlie Wax, a loose cannon shipped to Paris for a mission. Jonathan Rhys Meyers is Reece, his in-country American embassy handler and driver, a functionary who longs to move up the espionage ranks. When he hooks up with Charlie Wax, his wish becomes his nightmare.

10 ways to get your winter music fix (Friday, January 29, 2010) The coldest days of the year may have passed us by, but there's a good chance we still have quite a bit of undesirable weather coming before spring brings us the beach-worthy temps and sunny skies we've come to love. And although this edition of Kicks is all about getting out and enjoying the winter, I'm willing to bet there's a good portion of our readers who - like myself - would rather ride out the rest of this chilly, rainy season indoors enjoying some great tunes.Whether that means holing up in a local venue for a live show or just staying home and discovering some new music, there's plenty of good stuff to be heard. Here's 10 great ways to get your music fix this winter:
Theaters shake up show lineups (Friday, January 29, 2010) The temperatures may be cold, but Myrtle Beach's theater shows are heating up. There are a variety of different productions to choose from this winter, and no show is the same. The Palace Theatre has revitalized everything, with new shows, revamped original shows and new costumes and sets for its 15th season. The Palace's new Broadway Series, which features six productions through December, is in full swing with "Steel Magnolias.""We asked people what they wanted to see, and the main thing was the Broadway shows," said Greg London, the Palace Theatre's artistic director. "Children's theater was another thing people wanted to see. It has such an incredible market."
Area sports popular year-round (Friday, January 29, 2010) The mild climate of the Grand Strand allows both indoor and outdoor sports to serve as an enjoyable entertainment option throughout the year. This winter, Division I basketball and baseball at Conway's Coastal Carolina University, the Myrtle Beach Marathon and the Myrtle Beach Pelicans, a minor league baseball team, are your best options.Coastal Carolina's men's basketball team opened the 2009-10 season by accumulating the best record to open a campaign in school and Big South Conference history. Led by senior forward Joseph Harris, one of the nation's most accomplished small-school players, and South Carolina transfer Chad Gray, the Chanticleers could make their first appearance in the NCAA tournament since 1993.

Owner Allen Wion said he has seen a significant bump in customers since the temperatures started to drop in December."The parents say it's just cold or rainy, and there's not much else to do, so I win by default," Wion said.
